The Importance of Listening

One of the things I've learned through decades of tattooing is that being a good tattoo artist isn't only about knowing how to draw or knowing how to tattoo.

You have to know how to listen.

Every person who sits in front of me has a different reason for wanting a tattoo.

Sometimes they have spent years thinking about it.

Sometimes they have a very clear vision.

Sometimes they know they want something but don't yet know how to explain it.

And sometimes the most important part of the consultation is simply giving them the time and space to talk.

Listening Changes the Tattoo

When I listen to a collector, I'm not just listening for the subject they want.

I'm listening for the story behind it.

Why this image?

Why now?

Why this placement?

What does it mean to you?

Those answers can change how I approach the tattoo.

The Artist Isn't Working Alone

A tattoo may be created by the artist, but the story belongs to the person wearing it.

That's why I believe the relationship between artist and collector matters so much.

The consultation isn't a transaction.

It's the beginning of a relationship.

Experience Teaches You to Listen

When you're younger, you may be eager to show what you can do.

With time, you learn that sometimes the most important thing you can do is listen.

Thirty years of tattooing have taught me that every collector has something to teach you.

Every story is different.

Every body is different.

Every tattoo becomes its own experience.

Japanese Irezumi and Conversation

This is especially important when creating Japanese Irezumi.

Large compositions take time.

Placement matters.

Subject matters.

Background matters.

The way the tattoo moves across the body matters.

All of those decisions begin with understanding the person who will wear the tattoo.

That's why I believe every Japanese tattoo should begin with a conversation.

And before that conversation can be meaningful, you have to listen.

Authentic Japanese Irezumi, preserving tradition, honoring culture, creating legacy.
