Tebori
My journey with Tebori began in 1997 through my relationship with Horiyoshi III. Watching the traditional hand-poked method firsthand changed the way I viewed Japanese tattooing forever. It wasn't simply another technique—it was a living tradition that reflected generations of patience, discipline, and craftsmanship.
That same year, Horiyoshi III gifted me a set of traditional Tebori tools. To me, those tools represented far more than the ability to tattoo by hand. They symbolized responsibility, respect for the craft, and a lifelong commitment to learning. They became a constant reminder that mastering any traditional art requires humility, dedication, and years of practice.
Over the decades, I have continued to study Tebori through travel, observation, practice, and conversations with experienced tattoo artists from Japan and across Asia. Along the way, many generous artists shared their knowledge, offered guidance, and helped me better understand the techniques, philosophy, and discipline behind traditional Japanese tattooing. Those relationships have played an important role in my development and continue to inspire me today.
For me, Tebori is not about choosing tradition over modern tattoo machines. Each method has its own strengths, and both have a place in creating authentic Japanese Irezumi. My goal is always to select the approach that best serves the artwork, the composition, and the collector's long-term vision.
More importantly, Tebori represents a connection to history. Every hand movement reflects an artistic tradition that has been preserved for generations. Practicing Tebori reminds me that I am part of something much larger than myself—a lineage of artists who have dedicated their lives to preserving and advancing Japanese tattooing with respect and integrity.
I continue to study because I believe there is always more to learn. Every journey, every conversation, and every tattoo deepens my appreciation for this remarkable art form. My commitment is to honor the traditions that have inspired me while creating meaningful tattoos that collectors will carry with pride for a lifetime.
